NGC 6871 · Sh2-101 - Tulip Nebula

Often, when we look at an astrophotograph, our attention is immediately drawn to the brightest object. In this field in the constellation Cygnus, that role belongs to Sh2-101, the Tulip Nebula. But reducing the image to this single object would mean missing much of what makes this region of the Milky Way so special. Surrounding the nebula is a complex network of interstellar gas, with faint emission clouds blending into the star field. The warm hues reveal structures of ionized hydrogen, while the winding dark lanes are concentrations of dust that absorb the light from stars and nebulae lying behind them. Among these structures are dark nebulae catalogued as Barnard 146 and Barnard 147, along with other clouds listed in the LDN catalogue. Their irregular outlines, branching shapes and elongated extensions seem to trace out silhouettes and pillars. 📷 DWARF 3 🖥️ Processed with Stellar Studio and Adobe Photoshop
