C20 — The North America Nebula

At first glance, it’s easy to see where this nebula gets its name. Located in the constellation of Cygnus, the North America Nebula is a massive emission nebula made of glowing hydrogen gas, shaped by the radiation of nearby stars. It’s roughly 2,500 light-years away from Earth, meaning the light captured in this image started its journey long before it reached us. There’s something incredible about looking at a shape that resembles a continent on Earth… and realizing that what we’re actually seeing is an enormous cloud of gas floating through space.
