Moon

The Moon is Earth’s only natural satellite and the closest celestial body to us. It is about 384,400 km from Earth. Its diameter is about 3,474 km, roughly one-quarter of Earth’s diameter. It has no air and no liquid water on the surface, so there is no known life. Its gravity is weak, about one-sixth of Earth’s gravity. It orbits Earth once every 27.3 days. We always see almost the same side of the Moon because it rotates at the same rate that it orbits Earth. Together with the Sun, it causes ocean tides. Its surface is full of craters caused by meteor impacts. The first human landing on the Moon was in 1969 during the Apollo 11 mission. The Moon is very important because it helps stabilize Earth’s tilt, which affects climate and seasons.
